Tips To Consider Before Buying a Second-Hand Safe

Hello! My name is Danny and I recently had a couple of safes installed. I have a safe installed in the office of my business so I could keep any money and important documents safe when I am not around. At home, I had a gun safe installed in my basement so I could store my shotguns safely and securely. It was only when chatting to the locksmith that I realised how little I knew about the professional. I have since called in the same locksmith so he could review the security of my home and I have learnt an awful lot.

Security is paramount, not only for those on the outside intended to cause harm but also for those on the inside who require extra protection. For instance, you cannot leave an unattended gun just laying around in a house full of toddlers. They may fool around and end up hurting themselves. Being able to secure your valuables from outsiders also ensures that you do not incur any losses. For example, when a robber breaks into your home and finds expensive jewelry or money just kept in the drawers. Having a safe ensures that you have peace of mind knowing all your belongings are secure. However, due to certain reasons such as the lack of money, some people cannot afford to purchase new safes. A second-hand safe is one that has been used by an individual owner for a period of time. They require various considerations for one to acquire the right deal. Below are all the necessary tips required before purchasing a second-hand safe.

  1. Consider Security -- When purchasing the safe from an individual or a store you don't trust, then you have to think about your security first. Some of the cases involved in this include whether the dealer has kept aside a set of keys which they intend to use for breaking in later. This can happen if the safe has been delivered straight to your address, giving them all the location details they require. Another consideration on security is that once you purchase a lock, it should be yours. Therefore, you should be comfortable opening it whenever necessary. However, if the locking system is not checked well, it poses a chance of failure leaving you as the user locked out or your belongings in a condition that could be accessed. Certain old safes also end up falling short of the standards required by your insurance provider. This may disqualify all your claims whenever a breach occurs and valuable possessions are lost.
  2. Whether the Safe is Used or Reconditioned – Another important thing to consider before buying a second-hand safe is whether the safe being obtained has been used or reconditioned. Second-hand safes are only cleaned and the locks maintained. On the other hand, reconditioned safes pack a lot of features which have to be considered before purchase. For instance, all the key locks have to be changed and the safe sold with a new set of keys. Combination locks should be reset and well serviced. The internal bolts in the safe should also be lubricated and cleaned. As a bonus, the safe dealer has to spray paint the safes both inside and outside to give it a new look.
